Bull: Your Own True Lies is a workshop that uses truths and lies to create performances. This intensive workshop will explore how to make original work that is derived from their own lives, newspaper stories, family secrets, lies and pop culture. This workshop that galvanizes participants to:
• Move faster than think
• Write quicker than edit
• Create faster than critique

Bull: Your Own True Lies includes strategies for creating text and devising visual images for your own performance. Some people call it ‘flow’, ‘the zone’, or ‘source’, this workshop will help participants ride the wave of the creative process and opens up new strategies to making performance.
Bull: Your Own True Lies is offered to anyone interested in creating story telling performance. One must have a willingness to try out new ideas and an adventurous spirit to walk out into the unknown.

Workshop at brut Wien II

19th till 21th of April 2010
Lotte van den Berg & Merel de Groot (Amsterdam):

WHERE YOU ARE / public spaces in Jerusalem, Vienna and Kinshasa

Participation fee: 40 Euro

WHERE YOU ARE / public space in Jerusalem, Vienna and Kinshasa

For the workshop WHERE YOU ARE, the Dutch theatre directors Lotte van den Berg and Merel de Groot explore public spaces. The same workshop will be offered in the cities of Jerusalem, Vienna and Kinshasa. During each step the workshop will ask the questions: what a public space means in this city? In a city? Is it a place to meet or to pass by? How privatized is the public area? What happens if the workshop participants occupy or change the space? What happens if they stop, sit down and stay? What happens if they place some chairs, draw a line? They will interact by watching only. They will interact by building something. They will be performer and spectator trying to observe and act at the same time.

One central question will be whether it is possible to be spectator and participant in one and how do you observe and act at the same time. Furthermore it is the aim to explore the difference of reflecting upon life and acting within.

Lotte van den Berg studied Theatre Direction at the Amsterdam School of the Arts. After graduating, she started working freelance as a director for various Flemish and Dutch companies. In her work she is always asking herself the questions:
“How can I create a space where you can look without words and rules? A space in which the spectator becomes a participant who can experience the performance without expectations.”
From 2005 to 2006 Lotte van den Berg was responsible for the non-speaking parts in “Volk” at Toneelhuis Antwerp. A year later Toneelhuis’ artistic director Guy Cassiers offered her a permanent position. In 2009 she left Toneelhuis to become artistic director of a new structure in Dordrecht called OMSK (www.omsk.nl)

Merel de Groot lives in Amsterdam. She studied Acting and Theatre Directing from 2001 to 2003 at Theatre Academy Maastricht (NL) and Theatre Directing from 2003 to 2008 at Amsterdam School of Arts (NL). She worked as performer, director but also did workshops at Noord Nederlands Toneel (NL), the Grand Theatre in Groningen (NL), at Frascati WG (NL).

The introduction to the workshop WHERE YOU ARE / public spaces in Jerusalem, Vienna and Kinshasa will be presented at brut 19th April 2010.
